Advantages and Limitations of CNC

The computer numerical control includes machine tool and also non-machine tools. The CNC system are mainly used in the milling machine, lathe machine, drill press, grinding, sheet metal process, laser machine working. There is an automatic changing of the cutting tool operation that is developed in the CNC machining process. In Non-machine tools it includes the welding machines, electronic assembly, coordinate measuring machine, and tape laying, filament winding machines for composites.

  • Short production runs
  • On conventional machining it requires expensive jigs and fixtures
  • Parts with complicated outlines

Advantages of CNC:

  • Reduce the making/production cost
  • Increases the productivity
  • CNC improves the production planning control
  • Low skill operator is required
  • High accuracy and repeatability
  • Simplification of flexible automation
  • Greater flexibility
  • Complex machining operations are also performed easily
  • Indirect operating cost is reduced

  • Initial investment is considered to be high
  • It requires high maintenance cost
  • We can observe the low production rates

Some types of CNC machines used in the industry are:

  • Lathe / Turning operation
  • Milling / machining center
  • Drilling machine
  • Turret press and punching machine
  • Electrical discharge machining
  • Grinding machine
  • Laser cutting machining
  • Water jet cutting machine
  • Electro discharge machining
  • Coordinate measuring machine
  • Industrial Robots
